The David Douglas High School Theater Department is proud to present . . . Thieves' Carnival, a hilarious farce comedy!

This production show cases our excellent student actors, over 40 David Douglas students! Come and see students from your community SHINE!!!

Show dates are March 2nd-3rd and March 8th-10th at 7:30pm at the Howard F. Horner Performing Arts Center (1400 SE 130th Ave, between Stark and Division). Ticket prices are $5 for students and seniors, $7 for adults. Box office hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday on school days from 3:00-5:30pm, and an hour before show times.

Annie Harrell named Outstanding Teacher of the Year

Annie Harrell - 2012 Outstanding Teacher of the YearDavid Douglas special education teacher Annie Harrell has been named the 2012 Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Oregon Association for Vocational Special Needs Personnel (OAVSNP). Harrell teaches in the David Douglas Community Transition Program for 18-21 year old special education students.

She will be presented her statewide award at an awards banquet during the annual OAVSNP state conference.

In nominating Harrell for the award, Vocational Transition Coordinator Ron Hall cited her creation of an innovative program that allows students to acquire skills for daily living, as well as develop a range of vocational, recreation and leisure skills. "Her main goal has been to help students reach their potential and achieve their highest level of independence," Hall wrote in his nomination letter.

David Douglas administrator recognized

Barbara Kienle, Director of Student ServicesBarb Kienle, Director of Student Services for the David Douglas School District, has received the annual Achievement of Excellence Award from the Oregon Association of Central Office Administrators (OACOA), an arm of the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators (COSA).

The award is presented to one central office administrator each year in the state of Oregon who “represents the commitment to excellence in education that exemplifies the OACOA membership.” It essentially recognizes the central office administrator of the year in the state.

Kienle received the award Friday, Jan. 27 during COSA’s annual OASE/OACOA Conference.

Black History Month

Dr. Carter G. Woodson, Father of Black HistoryAs we observe Black History Month throughout the month of February, it is interesting to take a look back at where it all began. Harvard scholar Dr. Carter G. Woodson, know as the "Father of Black History", began promoting what was called Negro History Week in 1926 during the second week of February to celebrate the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass - two men who had greatly impacted the black population. Over the ensuing decades, it has evolved into a four-week-long celebration of African American History.

Locally, it is important to note that African American families are playing a central role in the increasing diversity of the David Douglas School District. Whereas 10 years ago African American students comprised less than 3 percent of our enrollment, today that figure is 10 percent.

Current year calendar changed; next year calendar revealed

The David Douglas School District has made some important changes to this year’s calendar that every parent and student should be aware of.

Beginning Feb. 1, late-start Wednesdays start a half hour later at our three middle schools and at David Douglas High School. This means from now on, middle school and DDHS start times on Wednesdays will be 9:30 a.m.

There is no change in start times for elementary schools or for Fir Ridge Campus.

Everybody Reads 2012

What if everybody read the same book?

Join Multnomah County Library's tenth annual Everybody Reads project! Explore important issues, connect with your neighbors, and attend lectures and other events.

This year's book selection is The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow. This debut novel tells the story of Rachel, the daughter of a Danish mother and a black G.I. who becomes the sole survivor of a family tragedy. With her strict African American grandmother as her new guardian, Rachel moves to a mostly black community in Portland, where her light brown skin, blue eyes and beauty bring mixed attention her way. Growing up in the 1980s, she learns to swallow her overwhelming grief and confronts her identity as a biracial young woman in a world that wants to see her as either black or white.

Winter Weather Procedures

With winter weather comes uncertainty about school closures, delays and snow bus routes. Here is some clarification regarding David Douglas' inclement weather procedures:

In the event that weather causes a complete school closure or a 2-hour delay, our SchoolMessenger system will be contacting homes within minutes of that decision. In addition, information will also be provided to the media and posted prominently on our website by 6 a.m.
